CPR Algorithms

Welcome to our comprehensive guide on CPR Algorithms, which are essential tools for health care professionals and laypersons alike. At Save a Life by NHCPS, we are dedicated to providing up-to-date resources that empower you to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) effectively. Understanding and applying these CPR algorithms can significantly improve survival rates in cardiac emergencies.

The Importance of CPR Algorithms

CPR algorithms are systematic guidelines that outline the steps to perform CPR in various scenarios. They provide a standardized approach to emergency care, ensuring that individuals receive the best possible assistance during critical moments.

  • Standardized Care: Ensures consistency in performing CPR across different responders.
  • Efficient Response: Helps prioritize actions in high-pressure situations.
  • Improved Outcomes: Increases cardiac arrest victims’ likelihood of survival and recovery.

Adult BLS

The Adult BLS Algorithm is laid out to help recognize a cardiac arrest and to be able to deliver high-quality CPR along with early defibrillation from an AED.

Simple Adult BLS

The Adult BLS Algorithm is laid out to help recognize a cardiac arrest and to be able to deliver high-quality CPR along with early defibrillation from an AED.

Opioid Treatment

The opioid-specific Algorithm is laid out to help address a patient who has likely overdosed on an Opioid, including the processes for administering Naloxone.

Overview of CPR Algorithms

There are specific CPR algorithms tailored for different age groups and situations. Familiarity with each is crucial for effective intervention.

Adult CPR Algorithm

The Adult CPR Algorithm provides guidelines for performing CPR on individuals aged eight years and older.

  • Check Responsiveness: Tap and shout to see if the person responds.
  • Call for Help: If unresponsive, call emergency services immediately.
  • Assess Breathing and Pulse: Check for normal breathing and a pulse for no more than 10 seconds.
  • Begin Chest Compressions: If no pulse, start high-quality chest compressions at a rate of 100-120 per minute.
  • Airway and Breathing: Open the airway and provide rescue breaths after every 30 compressions.

Pediatric CPR Algorithm

The Pediatric CPR Algorithm is designed for children aged 1 to 8 years.

  • Check Responsiveness and Breathing: Similar to adult CPR, but use age-appropriate techniques.
  • Activate Emergency Response: Call for help or send someone to call.
  • Begin CPR: Use one or two hands for compressions, depending on the child’s size.
  • Compression-to-Ventilation Ratio: If alone, perform 30 compressions followed by two breaths or 15:2 if two rescuers are present.

Infant CPR Algorithm

The Infant CPR Algorithm applies to infants under one year of age.

  • Check Responsiveness: Gently tap the infant’s foot and look for reactions.
  • Call for Help: If unresponsive, call emergency services.
  • Assess Breathing and Pulse: Check for breathing and brachial pulse.
  • Begin CPR: Use two fingers for chest compressions at a depth of about 1.5 inches.
  • Compression-to-Ventilation Ratio: Same as pediatric CPR.
